If you fall into this category and happens to ship a small amount of goods, check this article to see all of your LCL shipments details and procedures. This guide details what you need to know about costs, time, comparisons with other shipping methods, and more.

The difference between LCL shipping and loose cargo

LCL expedition

LCL shipping is a type of sea shipping that allows cargo to be inadequate to achieve a 20-foot or 40-foot container, regrouped with other merchandise. This type of shipment is sometimes referred to as bulk shipment.

Loose cargo load

Loose cargo can sometimes be mistaken with the LCL shipping. This type of cargo is a type of cargo that is not putted on a pallet and applies to packages that cannot be palletized or cannot be placed in containers because of their size.

Use loose cargo to represent cargo that has not yet been palletized. In most cases, the shipper will need to palletize the cargo to prevent damage and facilitate loading and discharging.

Positive and negative points of the LCL expedition

Positive points

First, when you are shipping LCL, you only pay for the quantity you want, not a fixed price like FCL. Also, shipment of fewer goods at closer intervals means you pay less in terms of storage. Secondly, LCL is more affordable than air freight so if you are not limited by time for yourTerminal Handling shipment, you can reduce shipping costs. Finally, when a container capacity is limited (in peak periods in particular) LCL can be more accessible and time-efficient than FCL.

Negative points

First, shipping LCL takes time because the goods must be charged and discharged in the container. Second, LCL is more expensive than FCL per cubic meter, and in some cases doubles. Also, if the customs clearance of other cargo is delayed, the cargo may be delayed.
LCL shipments are processed more, increasing the risk of damage and loss.

LCL Shipping costs

The cost of LCL is primarily measured by volume and is usually measured in cubic meters (CBM). The more space you need, the more money you will pay. However, container ships can carry significant weight, so volume is the most important element of the total cost, but it is also charged by the weight of goods.

LCL shipping costs include several factors.

Collection

Shipping costs are the cost of delivering goods to the desired warehouse.

The main stage

The main leg, or the cost of the trip, is not necessarily the most expensive part. Therefore, in some cases, the cost of CFS can be high due to the need for more machinery and personnel.

Delivery

Shipping costs are the costs of sending goods to the desired warehouse.

Destination

Upon arrival in the destination country, LCL shipments must be stopped at CFS for deconsolidation or congestion relief.

 Origin

LCL freight must be containerized with other freight or integrated into a container freight station or CFS. This is called tank filling.

LCL or Air Freight?

The difference between LCL and Air Freight

air freight vs sea freight

Many importers and exporters wonder whether it is better to choose LCL or Air Freight when you have a small shipment.

In fact, it depends in part on how much time you can spend for your delivery and how much you are willing to pay.
Let's say you're shipping 500 hockey packs from Shanghai to Los Angeles (you might be wondering, this is about 0.06 CBM and 85 kg).
These aren't exactly the prices, but shipping a hockey pack by LCL costs about $ 400, but by air it costs $ 600.
Double it to 1,000 hockey packs. LCL is currently $ 475, but Air has risen to $ 900. Doubled again, 2,000 hockey packs are still $ 475 in LCL, but Air can be up to $ 1,570.

As shipments increase in height & weight, airfares will increase more efficient than LCL rates. In addition, weight increases have an even greater impact.

Alternatively, air transportation will be faster. In this case, the shipment will require 7 to 9 days by air and 25 to 30 days by LCL. More, it is not an exact delay of the transit time, but they do show the difference between air freight and LCL transportation.

How to choose between air Freight and LCL

When you deliver in LCL, you may be debited for at least 1 m3. This approach means that even when you have a smaller shipment, you may not get a decreased price.

Both air and LCL prices are calculated through each weight and quantity. But the weight is the maximum limit for air critical factor—that is to say, minuscule  will increase in weight since they approach better prices.

In LCL, however, space is more important than weight. In conclusion, an LCL shipment will be more economical for the items with a high weight.

Air cargo rates and transit times do not differ significantly depending on the delivery city. For illustration, air freight from Shanghai to Los Angeles costs are about the same as air travel from Shanghai to New York. For LCL, however, this difference in distance increases both cost and transit time.

LCL or FCL?

However, if the load is not heavy, LCL is the ideal shipping method.

LCL is great for small packages, but it can be worth buying a complete container even though you are not having enough cargo.

Which is the best method for you?

This is due to the fact that LCL by CBM is more expensive than FCL. Therefore, if the shipment reaches a certain quantity, a full container may be more appropriate as you can enjoy the benefits of FCL transport, such as shorter transport time and reduced risk of damage, at a slightly higher price.

Note: When shipping from Amazon's warehouse, it's usually easier to book an LCL delivery pickup. Therefore, even if you ship the FCL and save money, you may endure additional delay charges due to the delayed stock date.

The tipping point for your choice

In practice, this depends on the size of the load, but in general, FCL can be considered when the amount reaches about 10 CBM.

Additional costs for the shipper

Wrap and labelling for AMAZON shipper

When shipping items to an Amazon FBA warehouse, they must be labelled and palletized according to Amazon's requirements

Labeling products at the factory is often the most efficient and cost-effective option.

However, before palletizing, make sure you are familiar with Amazon's standards and requirements.

Import Bonds

A customs deposit must be submitted every time you import into the US. This is essentially insurance from customs and border protection if the society does not pay.

If you send few shipments, choose a disposable bond. Annual bonds are certainly better for frequent shippers.

Taxes and duties

Customs taxes and duties are determined by the customs and border police when the goods arrive at the port, but you can estimate the amount to pay in advance.

The needed paperwork for LCL shipment

An overview of all documents required for LCL transport can be found in the most important freight document guide.

How long does LCL shipping take?

Shipping usually takes 6-10 weeks, depending on the origin and destination. LCL shipments tend to take slightly longer than FCL shipments due to integration and non-integration.

Expert advice on how to get the best LCL shipping rates

Request a quote

Ask for a quote from several carriers. If you have numerous offers, choosing the best price is not enough. It also gives you an overview of market rates and helps you to better understand LCL rates and shipping costs. That said, you may see quotes much higher or much lower than LCL's shipping costs on the market, but it is not clear except if you have a series of quotes to check against.

Take into account the dimensions of the pallets

The supplier always lists the dimensions of the merchandise carton, but also requests the dimensions including the pallet. Pallets occupy space inside the container and incur charges.

Consider fragile shipments

Keep in mind that fragile items take up more space and can cost more.

Most LCL transport pallets are stacked to maximize container space. But when you ship a flat-screen TV, you don't want to stack anything on top of it. This means that the cost is higher because the cargo in the container takes up less space for other packages.

Book a door-to-door service with a freight forwarder

Book a door-to-door service with your carrier to avoid hidden LCL fees and charges. The day may come when you get an LCL offer that looks incredibly cheap. So what's wrong?

Now, the LCL charges you thought were included may not be part of the offer.

To avoid this, Sandeep Bhalotia, CEO of logistics provider Plan Your Cargo, recommends booking LCL's door-to-door or door-to-door service. “You can get a discount at the point of departure, but if the door-to-door service is not included, the discount can be offset by the high rates at the destination,” he explains. “The offers, including door-to-door service, mean that all charges have been pre-validated.”

Consider the inner dimensions of your containers

Make sure you comprehend the interior container measurements.  A 20-foot container is not really 20 feet, at least from the inside. Make sure you know the internal dimensions of the container to understand how much space you really need and decide whether LCL or FCL is right for you.

Respect your warehouse guidelines

If you are an Amazon carrier, check your retention policy. Amazon FBA has strict storage policies that change from time to time. If you know your requirements, you can ask your provider to manage them and save money later.
